Agent Will Robie is a master of killing, and David Baldacci's thriller is an excellent match for audio. Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy prove a formidable team in ramping up the tension as Robie, a highly skilled hit man, pursues Jessica Reel, a fellow agent and assassin who appears to have gone rogue. Robie quickly finds that there's more to Reel's apparent betrayal than meets the eye, including a significant global threat. McLarty does the lion's share of the narration, finding unique voices for Robie and the various agents, while Cassidy smoothly and clearly portrays the various women involved. The use of two narrators helps provide tension and a theatrical atmosphere. Great narration skills and plotting will grip listeners. S.C.A. Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy are a tried-and-true team, having already narrated a number of Baldacci's books together. With Cassidy delivering all the female dialogue and McLarty reading everything else, their voices dovetail seamlessly. Agent John Puller's brother, Robert, has escaped from a high-security prison, leaving a dead man in his cell. Having received life imprisonment for treason, he's now on the run not only from law enforcement but also from other forces who want him dead. John Puller wants to find his brother and prove his innocence. Action is fast, and, as the plot twists and turns, excitement ratchets up, heightened by subtle sound effects. Cassidy keeps the listener guessing with her characterization of Veronica Knox. Is she helping Puller, or policing him? An enjoyable stand-alone thriller. C.A.T. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine

Fans of series character John Puller will be pleased with this third entry, which finally provides the story of Puller's brother, Robert, who was convicted of treason two years earlier and in a top-security military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. When Robert escapes, John teams up with U.S. Army intelligence agent Victoria Knox to find his brother and bring him back. It soon becomes clear that some dangerous characters are also on Robert's trail, and the Puller brothers must work together to prove Robert's innocence—and survive. Accomplished performers McLarty and Cassidy, who also narrate Baldacci's King and Maxwell series, return, with McLarty voicing the male and Cassidy the female characters in this dialogue-rich thriller. They ably manage the page-turning pace and ramp up the tension as the danger escalates and Puller and Knox begin to wonder whom they can trust. Sound effects intensify the action-packed chase scenes in this satisfying series entry. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
